A fuuny incident on the London Underground involving Lea Club rowers

June Cann, Sid Radleys youngest daughter rowed for Lea rowing clubs in 1949 and the early 1950s. The clubs on the Lea then existed on a shoestring . June has told me that to attend a regatta at Hammersmith with 2 fours and 2 scullers the Lea crews travelled by London Underground carrying their blades . So 12 blades in a tube carriage, caused quite a commotion.Of course they then used borrowed boats in the regatta.

These days they wouldn’t have got past the ticket barrier.

The post war years were very different to now and when June rowed there was still rationing of numerous items.  Rationing in fact didn’t end until 1954.
